Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible safari destinations, located in the southern circuit near the city of Dar es Salaam. It is often considered a gateway to larger southern parks like Selous (Nyerere) and Ruaha. The park features wide open savannahs, rolling plains, and seasonal wetlands that closely resemble the famous ecosystems of the Serengeti, making it an excellent destination for classic game drives and short safari trips.
The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, lions, and antelopes. One of the most popular areas for wildlife viewing is the Mkata Floodplain, where animals gather in large numbers, especially during the dry season. Birdlife is also abundant, with over 400 species recorded, making Mikumi a great destination for both wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
Mikumi National Park offers easy access, good road connections, and well-organized safari experiences, making it ideal for travelers with limited time. Game drives provide excellent opportunities to see wildlife in open landscapes with fewer crowds compared to northern parks. Its proximity to urban centers makes it one of the most popular entry-level safari destinations in southern Tanzania.
