Lake Manyara National Park is a beautiful and compact safari destination located in northern Tanzania along the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The park is known for its dramatic scenery, where lush groundwater forests, open grasslands, and the vast alkaline Lake Manyara create a diverse and picturesque landscape. This variety of habitats makes it one of the most visually striking parks in the northern safari circuit.
The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior seen in only a few places in Africa. Visitors may also encounter large troops of baboons, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and a wide variety of antelope species. Lake Manyara itself attracts thousands of flamingos and other waterbirds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers with over 400 recorded bird species.
In addition to game drives, Lake Manyara National Park offers excellent scenic viewpoints and photographic opportunities along the Rift Valley escarpment. The park is often visited as part of a northern Tanzania safari itinerary due to its proximity to Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti. Its combination of wildlife, birdlife, and stunning landscapes makes it a perfect introduction to Tanzania’s safari experience.
